about BARBARA METTLERBarbara Mettler's work has been, since she first opened her studio in New York city in 1934, a continuous search for basic elements of dance which can make it immediately available to all people as a creative art activity. Believing that art activity is a basic human need and that dance, the art of body movement, is the primary, central art, she has boldly explored new approaches both to the body as instrument and to movement as the material of dance. Her way of work emphasizes improvisation as a means of liberating and cultivating the natural creative movement resources which are in everyone. She has taught persons of all ages from kindergarten to elderly, including those with special needs. Her present work in large group improvisation is a vital new direction in contemporary dance. Barbara Mettler's work is widely known in this country and abroad. Through her demonstrations, teaching, books and films, it has influenced many workers in the fields of art, education, recreation and therapy. Since 1963 her studio has been in Tucson , Arizona , where it is known as the Tucson Creative Dance Center. | ||
